PHOENIX -- If you're looking to adopt a pet, a pet slumber party may help your choose the right one.

"People kind of have this expectation that the animal's going to run right over to them, wag their tail, jump in their lap and start licking their faces and that doesn't always happen," Judith Gardner with the Arizona Animal Welfare League said.

Some pets don't show well in a shelter environment.

Scientists in Tucson are asking the public to help fund a valley fever vaccine. Researchers are creating the vaccine from the same fungus that causes the disease.

PHOENIX -- A whopping 94 percent of pet owners buy gifts for their pets, and more than three-quarters (78 percent) include their beloved pet(s) in their holiday cards or photos, according to a survey by the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA (AAWL & SPCA).

AAWL & SPCA, Arizona's oldest and largest no-kill animal shelter, recently polled its adopters and supporters to find out how they celebrate the holiday season with their pets. The findings show that the majority of animal lovers include their pets in every aspect of the holiday.

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Animal Welfare League offers a program to help pet owners in a bind.

The "Last Litter" program helps dog owners who have unexpected litters, sometimes referred to as an "oops" litter.

A litter of eight Boston Terrier Puggle mixes is the latest participant in the program.

"They're all named for the Cardinals football players. Floyd is running around here somewhere celebrating his catch from yesterday," said AAWL veterinarian Dr. Claudia Channing.

TEMPE, AZ - Have you ever been to an animal shelter and wondered if the dogs are actually trying to get your attention by being extra cute? 

Well, an ASU psychologist is trying to figure out just that: do dogs exhibit behavior that makes them more adoptable? 

And is this something that can be taught?

Clive Wynne is not your typical dog lover.

“What I love about Oakley, is that he brings the ball back,” says Wynne as he plays fetch with one of the dogs being sheltered at the Arizona Animal Welfare League.

The non-profit, no-kill organization National Mill Dog Rescue, (NMDR), recently rescued seventy-five surrendered breeding dogs from multiple puppy mills in Kansas and Missouri.
