PHOENIX - Studies show that black dogs and cats are adopted less often than pets of other colors, but Black Cat Appreciation Day is hoping to change that.

On Monday, the Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA starts a week-long special for adoptable dark-colored felines.

The no-kill animal shelter's "Me and My Shadow" event is a two-for-one adoption deal, meaning that when you adopt a black cat or kitten, you can also adopt a second black or black-and-white one at no extra charge.

AAWL and SPCA is hoping the adoption special will help get the usually unwanted black cats out of the shelter and into a home where they will always have a playmate.

You can see adoptable pets online or head into their main shelter at 25 N. 40th Street in Phoenix. The shelter also has an adoption location at Chandler Fashion Mall, the PetMatch Adoption Center.

The "Me and My Shadow" adoption special lasts through August 23.
