The Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA (AAWL & SPCA) – the largest and oldest no-kill shelter in Arizona – is seeking a full-time Volunteer Coordinator to oversee AAWL’s database of 450+ volunteers while also growing this database to welcome new members. The coordinator will work within the Volunteer and Events Department and be expected to collaborate across departments to help staff volunteer positions and provide ongoing support.

The Volunteer Coordinator will play a vital role in enhancing AAWL’s volunteer and community outreach programs by expanding our volunteer base and ensuring all volunteers receive proper training to safely and effectively care for our animals. Volunteers are essential to our mission, providing invaluable support to our organization! 

This is a full-time, non-exempt position based in Phoenix and presents an exciting opportunity for a professional who has a desire to strengthen our shelter, volunteer, and community programs and has a deep passion for animal welfare work. The Volunteer Coordinator will be expected to work a Tuesday – Saturday schedule, with some Sundays required as needed. This position reports directly to the Volunteer & Event Manager.  As a key member of our small but growing Community Engagement team, this position offers the chance to inspire and empower volunteers while expanding AAWL’s impact in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategies for recruiting, onboarding, and retaining volunteers through speaking engagements, community events, and marketing collaborations, ensuring a consistent and engaged volunteer base.
  • Onboard and train new volunteers, introducing them to their roles and the AAWL community.
  • Organize and review volunteer applications for both new and existing volunteers.
  • Assist in managing the Better Impact volunteer database, ensuring accurate records, tracking volunteer hours, and supporting onsite clock-in/out processes.
  • Create and contribute content for the AAWL weekly newsletter, monthly Chandler newsletter, and multiple volunteer group Facebook pages.
  • Develop and manage online educational resources for volunteers, including training videos, resource packets, and other materials. Continuously maintain and improve digital orientation and training programs, while collaborating with staff to offer in-person training opportunities.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with volunteers, fostering positive relationships and serving as a staff liaison.
  • Provide conflict resolution support by facilitating conversations, offering collaborative solutions, and resolving interpersonal issues.
  • Plan and organize volunteer mixers/social events throughout the year, including Volunteer Appreciation Week and the annual Volunteer & Staff Appreciation Event. Support other AAWL community engagement and signature events as needed, serving as the point of contact for volunteers at events such as An Evening to Paws, Design for Dogs, and Walk to Save Animals.
  • Oversee volunteer recognition, including tracking volunteer hours and implementing incentive programs.
  • Collaborate with all AAWL departments to identify and create meaningful volunteer roles that align with each department's needs and goals.
  • Work with the Volunteer & Events Manager to assess volunteer needs and identify areas where volunteers can improve efficiency and provide support.
  • Develop and implement tailored training programs to ensure volunteers are well-prepared and equipped for their roles.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of volunteer roles, adjusting them as needed to meet evolving needs.
  • Support the creation of new programs that align with the organization’s goals and objectives.

Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish (both spoken and written) is required.
  • Previous experience in volunteer management is preferred.
  • Proven experience in coordinating programs and projects.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • At least one year of experience in customer service.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a passion for working with diverse communities and fostering collaborative relationships with volunteers, staff, and the public.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds within the AAWL organization and the broader community.
  • Proficiency in basic computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, and similar tools.
  • Must be able to work a Tuesday -Saturday schedule with some Sundays as needed.

Employment Details

AAWL offers compensation that is commensurate with experience and competitive with animal welfare salaries.  The salary range for this position is $17.02 – 19.86/hour pending on experience.  This is a full-time, non-exempt position that accrues paid sick time. Full-time benefits include employer-paid medical insurance, paid vacation/sick time off, and twelve paid holidays.
