Be part of a team that is helping pets and the people who love them. Founded in 1971, the Arizona Animal Welfare League is the largest and oldest no-kill shelter in the state of Arizona. Starting as a small sanctuary for homeless animals, we have grown over the past 53 years to become a statewide animal welfare organization providing a full range of community services from adoptions and behavioral assessments to community education and low-cost veterinary services.

Our Board of Directors recently adopted a new strategic focus in response to an increase in the number of pet owners who surrender their animals because of housing struggles and limited access to affordable veterinary or behavior care. Under the guidance of our management team and Board, we are working to expand programs to help keep pets in their homes where they belong.

As part of our efforts to monitor the implementation of that plan and ensure it’s solving these animal welfare challenges, we are seeking volunteer leaders to join our dynamic Board of Directors. We are looking for Board members who are strategic and committed to AAWL’s mission to provide excellent care, protection, and loving compassion for the life of the animals entrusted to us and to take a leadership role in promoting humane values for the benefit of all animals and people.

Based on our recent review of board skills, connections and lived experiences among current Board members, we are seeking board members who will help broaden our current board. For this reason, we encourage applications from people with experience in human resources, law, construction, and real estate expertise, as well as those connected the veterinary field.

Board members are actively involved in organizational governance, and are expected to attend monthly board meetings, contribute Annual Board Dues of $500, make a personal financial contribution and/or purchase/raise a minimum of one $3,500 sponsorship for Evenings to Paws (April) or the Walk to Save Animals (November}, and bring four prospective donors, volunteers or fosters each year to tour the shelter or to attend an AAWL event.

The Nominating Committee is accepting letters of interest until October 31, 2024. Please send inquires to Marketing@aawl.org with the subject line - Board of Directors Opportunity.
