The Arizona Animal Welfare League and Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (AAWL & SPCA) has found new homes for 3,000 dogs and cats through its PetMatch Adoption Center at Chandler Fashion Center.
The 3000th adoption took place Saturday, June 27, when puppy Amore was adopted by Michael Vincent and Tracy Logelin of Tempe. The couple, who lost one of their dogs to old age nearly a year ago, had been thinking about getting a new dog, often stopping in to the AAWL & SPCA adoption center at the mall and looking around. Tracy says that, when she saw Amore, it was love at first sight because she is very similar to the dog they lost. They brought their two dogs, Logan and Nola, in to the adoption center meet Amore and the dogs got along great, according to a press release.
AAWL & SPCA’s PetMatch location at Chandler Fashion Center demonstrates the success of locating non-profit animal rescue organizations in high-end retail centers. One in three pets adopted through the no-kill shelter is adopted at the Chandler mall location, which is staffed primarily by volunteers.
“The goal of the Arizona Animal Welfare League is to bring adoptable pets to where more people will see them and learn about how wonderful these rescued animals are,” Judith Gardner, president and CEO of AAWL & SPCA, said in the release. “The Chandler PetMatch Center gives more people the opportunity to learn about the benefits of adoption outside of a shelter environment.”
She cites a survey showing that 75 percent of people who acquired a pet did so from “non-adoption“ sources; however, 58 percent of those surveyed said they would consider an adoption source, such as an animal shelter. Of the group that said they wouldn’t adopt a pet vs. buying one, 36 percent also reported that they were unfamiliar with pet adoption.
“Every pet adopted at the Chandler Fashion Center PetMatch location, as well as from our main shelter in central Phoenix, opens up room for AAWL & SPCA to rescue another animal from euthanasia,” adds Gardner. “That means 6,000 wonderful pets now have new homes, thanks to the partnership between AAWL and Chandler Fashion Center.”
All of AAWL & SPCA’s adoptable animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped before being placed in new homes.
The PetMatch Adoption Center at Chandler Fashion Center is near Dillard’s on the 2nd floor of the mall, which is at 3111 W. Chandler Blvd. Contact the adoption center at 602-781-3906.
In addition to adoptable dogs and cats, the PetMatch Adoption Center at Chandler Fashion Centers offers an array of pet products, including toys, beds, crates, food and more. Sales of pet products are tax-free and help support care of animals at the nonprofit adoption center.
