The Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) – the oldest no-kill shelter in Arizona – is seeking a full-time bilingual Community Animal Health Coordinator to fulfill a highly rewarding position assisting the community clinic veterinarians and as a key member of our community medical team at our low-cost AAWL’s Community Vet Clinic and Mobile Clinic.

The Community Vet Clinic’s mission is to provide low-cost veterinary services to the public while providing high-quality medical care. The Community Animal Health Coordinator supports the delivery of accessible veterinary care through the Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC) and off-site mobile community clinics. This position serves a dual role by providing veterinary assistant support and community care coordination, acting as a primary point of contact for community members who experience barriers to accessing veterinary services. They will demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills, compassion, and a positive attitude.

The coordinator communicates directly with clients to assess needs, coordinate appointments, and connect families with appropriate veterinary services, while also assisting veterinary staff during clinic and mobile operations. This role is essential to advancing organizational goals related to access to care, community engagement, and animal welfare.

The Community Coordinator reports to the Veterinary Community Clinic Manager and works full-time. Clinic hours are Saturdays from 7am to 6:00pm and varying vaccine events; while there is scheduling flexibility within those hours this is a 4 or 5 day per week position that does require Saturdays for vaccine clinic.

Responsibilities

Community Care Coordination & Client Communication

· Serve as a primary liaison between the Community Veterinary Clinic and community members seeking veterinary services.

· Communicate clearly, respectfully, and compassionately with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those facing financial, language, or transportation barriers.

· Coordinate and schedule appointments for clinic and mobile services based on client needs and program availability.

· Provide accurate information regarding clinic services, eligibility, appointment preparation, and follow-up care.

· Assist clients with intake, consent forms, and navigation of clinic processes.

· Identify client needs or concerns and escalate medical or operational issues to appropriate staff as needed.

Support outreach and engagement efforts by assisting with appointment coordination for mobile clinics and community programs.

Veterinary Assistant & Clinical Support

· Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during examinations, treatments, and procedures/surgeries as directed.

· Prepare and maintain exam rooms and mobile clinic stations, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and appropriate stocking of supplies.

· Safely handle animals in accordance with established animal handling, disease control, and patient care protocols.

· Assist with basic patient care tasks such as obtaining TPR, administering treatments, and monitoring patients.

Clean and sanitize equipment and work areas in accordance with infection control standards.

Team & Program Support

· Work collaboratively with veterinary staff, clinic teams, and the Community Medicine Manager to support efficient clinic and mobile operations.

· Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and cross-departmental initiatives as assigned.

Assist with volunteer support during community clinics as needed.

Qualifications

· At least one year as a veterinary assistant or technician

· Bilingual (English/Spanish) required. Ability to communicate effectively and establish rapport with clients in both languages in verbal and written formats.

Ability to adapt to change and accept new duties within a fast-growing organization; and ability to work with diverse individuals within the organization and broader community.

Requirements

Requires periodic sitting at a computer station with prolonged standing and walking. Use of computer, phone and general office equipment. Must be comfortable handling dogs and cats daily on a continuous basis. Will be exposed to disinfectant solutions and subject to bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament. Requires a normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate with animals, the public, volunteers, and staff. Also requires flexibility to readily adapt to a fast-paced changing environment and the ability to work on weekends and holidays.
