The Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) – the largest and oldest no-kill shelter in Arizona – is seeking both full and part time Chandler Adoption Specialists. The Chandler Specialist is responsible for day-to-day duties in our Chandler Mall Adoption Center. The Chandler Specialist participates in the care of cats and dogs housed at the mall adoption center as well as adoption-related processes and duties related to retail sales and donation processing at the register. Shift Lead opportunities exist for staff with demonstrated leadership skills and experience beyond the minimum qualifications outlined below.

AAWL is looking for someone to fill this role who has solid communications and interpersonal skills and is comfortable working and interacting frequently with members of the public, volunteers, and co-workers. The Chandler Specialist position also requires attention to detail, decision making skills, and the ability to work independently. The Chandler Specialist is expected to interact with all animals on site daily, and with the general public in a retail environment.

This position reports to the Chandler Manager. This is a part-time (20 – 30 hours/week), non-exempt position in Chandler. The hours range from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Shifts are generally 6-8 hours. Friday thru Tuesday availability. Evening and weekend availability required.

Responsibilities

  • Use PetPoint to document animals moving through the intake to adoption process, complete adoptions.
  • Actively work with the public to find the right pet for their family by learning the personalities and needs of the animals in our care at the Chandler adoptions center.
  • Work thru the conversational adoption process to help families select an appropriate pet.
  • Handle various retail-related duties, including inventory, stocking, and display management.
  • Suggestively sell retail items and solicit customers at the counter for donations.
  • Actively participate in the care and feeding of dogs and cats at the Chandler location.
  • Create an inviting, welcoming and supportive environment for volunteers.
  • Use various Microsoft programs (word, excel) to track information.
  • Handle and manage cash, including opening, balancing, and closing the till.
  • Other duties as assigned to support overall mall adoption center operations.

Qualifications

  • 6 months of work experience, including face-to-face customer service required.
  • Animal handling experience other than your own animals is preferred, but not required.
  • This position requires working both indoors and occasionally outdoors in all weather conditions, and the ability to lift 30 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to read and write English.
  • Ability to adapt to change and accept new duties within a fast-growing organization
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals within the organization and broader community.

Requirements

Requires periodic sitting at a computer station with prolonged standing and walking. Use of personal computer, phone, and general office equipment. Must be comfortable handling dogs and cats daily on a continuous basis. Will be exposed to disinfectant solutions and subject to bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate with animals, the public, volunteers, and staff. Also requires flexibility to readily adapt to a fast-paced changing environment and the ability to work weekends and holidays.

Employment Details

AAWL offers compensation that is commensurate with experience and competitive with animal welfare salaries. This position pays $16.08/hr. to start, $16.58 post training. This is a part-time, non-exempt position that accrues paid sick time and twelve paid holidays. Weekend availability required. Full time non-exempt position accrues paid sick time, pto, twelve paid holidays and is eligible for medical insurance and other voluntary benefits.
