The Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) – the largest and oldest no-kill shelter in Arizona – is seeking a part-time Intake Assistant who has a passion for animal welfare and want to directly impact AAWL's life saving mission. This position is involved in conducting both field and in-office evaluations of cats to assess behavior/medical needs and in transporting animals. The Intake Assistant also is responsible for preparing cats for adoption, including drawing blood, administering vaccines, and microchipping. The Intake Assistant serves as AAWL’s representative during intakes and must communicate and work compassionately with diverse groups, including people handling challenging and traumatic situations involving their pets. The Intake Assistant must maintain a calm, compassionate demeanor and be able to make decisions regarding intaking animals based on organizational guidelines.
Intake Assistants cannot be allergic to dogs or cats, as you will work with all breeds/sizes of cats. This job has a varied schedule each week starting as early at 5:30am and ending as late as 7pm, depending on scheduled intakes. Part time hours 20 - 25 hours per week.
Responsibilities
- Travel to partner organizations to evaluate and select animals; then transport back to AAWL.
- Respectfully and compassionately work with families surrendering pets.
- Assess animals’ condition at intake using provided guidelines to identify animals that may need additional care, both medical and behavioral; accurately document the assessment.
- Draw blood for tests, administer vaccines, flea & tick preventatives, dewormers, and implant microchips.
- Quickly and accurately enter data into PetPoint; schedule exams, surgeries and follow ups.
- Participate in modifications for cats on behavior hold.
- Work with volunteers assisting in intake/behavior assessments in a welcoming manner.

Qualifications
- No degree requirement.
- AAWL’s vehicle insurance requires employees using transport vehicles to be 21+ with clean driving record.
- One-year of work experience is required.
- Experience with animals other than your own is preferred.
- Must be able to lift and carry 50lbs and perform duties that require lifting, bending, kneeling, and stooping throughout a shift.
- Must be able to work with and handle all breeds of dog in a safe and calm manner.
- Must be able to read and write English.
- Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Office, Excel and basic data entry skills.
- Ability to adapt to change and accept new duties within a fast-growing organization; and
- Ability to work with diverse individuals within the organization and broader community.
Requirements
Requires periodic sitting at a computer station with prolonged standing and walking. Use of personal computers, phones, and general office equipment. Must be comfortable handling dogs and cats daily on a continuous basis. Will be exposed to disinfectant solutions and subject to bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate with animals, the public, volunteers, and staff. Also requires flexibility to readily adapt to a fast-paced changing environment and the ability to work weekends and holidays.

Employment Details
AAWL offers compensation that is commensurate with experience and competitive with animal welfare salaries. This position starts at $16/hr; to 17.91 post training. Part-time, non-exempt positions accrue paid sick time and twelve paid holidays. Full-time, non-exempt positions include employer-paid medical insurance, paid vacation/sick time off, and twelve paid holidays.
