We know this isn’t easy. If you’re facing the decision to surrender your pet, you’re not alone—and we’re here to help you understand your options and what comes next.
Before You Decide
Sometimes giving up your pet feels like the only option, but there may be other ways to help you and your pet. We encourage you to explore available resources, including training support, veterinary care and other options. Many challenges, like behavior or financial strain, can be addressed with the right support. If finding a new family for your pet is still the best choice for your situation, we’ll walk you through the next steps.

The Arizona Pet Project offers a variety of resources, including access to vet services for sick/injured pets, help with pet housing deposits and personalized 1-1 counseling for human-animal needs.
About Our Program
Our Rehome Your Pet Program may be able to help place your pet with a new family. Here’s what to know:
Fees & Requirements
- A $50 fee helps cover the cost of care
- If cost is a barrier, please reach out, we don’t want it to stand in the way
- You must be the legal owner of the pet
- Valid ID is required at the time of drop off.
Important to Know
- We aren’t able to accept every pet due to limited space
- If space isn’t immediately available, there may be a wait before we can bring your pet in
- This program is not for pets originally adopted through AAWL. Pets adopted through AAWL are accepted back at any time.
How the Process Works
1. Submit an Application
Complete the Rehome Your Pet form for your pet to tell us about your pet and your situation.
2. Application Review
Our team will review your application to see if we have the space and resources to move forward. This process can take up to a week, we appreciate your patience.
3. Evaluation
If your pet is a good fit for our program, we’ll schedule a behavioral and medical assessment to help us find the right family for them.
4. Next Steps
After the evaluation, we’ll share our decision with you. If we’re able to move forward, we’ll work with you to schedule a time to bring your pet in based on available space.
