What to Expect with a New Pet: The 3/3/3 Rule

I Have a New Pet

Bringing home a new pet is exciting, but settling in takes time, not just for your family but also for your new furry family member.

3 Days – Your pet may feel overwhelmed with all the new things in its environment

When bringing home a new pet, stay calm and avoid overwhelming them with excitement. Let them enter quietly and explore their new surroundings at their own pace. Try setting up a safe, quiet space where they can eat, sleep, and relax. It’s completely normal for them to feel shy or unsure at first. They will slowly start to sniff around and get more comfortable in their new home.

3 Weeks – Your pet begins settling into routines and feeling more comfortable.

You may see an increase in activity or playfulness. Over the next couple of weeks, you may start to see some changes. This is completely normal and a great sign that they’re adapting to their new life!

3 Months – Your pet is typically fully adjusted and bonded with your family!

Their confidence grows, routines feel familiar, and you may start to see your pet’s real personality shine through. Behaviors that were once hidden, whether silly, sweet, or sometimes a little challenging, often begin to surface as they become more comfortable in their new home.

This is a wonderful milestone, but it’s also a great time to focus on training, bonding, and reinforcing boundaries. Your pet is telling you, “I feel safe here,” and that’s a beautiful foundation. Keep building that trust and structure, and enjoy every moment!
