A few simple choices can make a big difference in keeping your cat happy and consistent with their litter box. Here’s what to keep in mind!
Number of Litter Boxes
Here’s a good rule: one litter box per cat, plus one extra. If possible, place each box in a separate location to give every cat a little privacy.
Size and Type of Litter Box
Your litter box should be about 1½ times the length of your cat’s body so they have plenty of room to turn and dig. Most cats prefer an open box so they don’t feel trapped. If you have a larger home, having boxes in multiple areas saves your cat a long trek.
A note on self-cleaning boxes: while convenient for owners, the noise and movement can frighten many cats and cause them to avoid the box altogether.
Location
Cats like privacy, but not isolation. Extra bathrooms, unused closets, or quiet corners work well. Avoid the laundry room or garage since both tend to be dark and noisy. If placing multiple boxes in the same area, never position them facing each other.
Type of Litter
Unscented litter is always the best choice. Scented litter is designed to appeal to humans, not cats, and can actually drive them away. Whether you choose clumping or non-clumping is entirely up to you. Just be mindful that some fine-textured litters can create dust that triggers sneezing.
Keeping It Clean
- Scoop at least once a day, twice is even better.
- Do a full clean with blue Dawn dish soap and water at least once a month.
- Make sure other pets or young children aren’t blocking or disturbing your cat’s access to the box. A cat that feels cornered or watched will look elsewhere!
