The Arizona Animal Welfare League is a limited-intake shelter caring for about 4,300 animals annually.  Please review our full list of services at  The Medical Director provides leadership and direction not only to the shelter clinic and staff but is also responsible for AAWL's low-cost clinic which provides affordable vet care to the public, and the foster department which places approximately 1300 animals per year. In addition, our medical team provides help and assistance to other rescue operations and shelters in rural areas of the state, serving as consultants and partners in all areas of operation. Our goal is to be innovative and a leader in the animal welfare sector and an important resource for partners throughout the state of Arizona and the Western United States.


Job Description:

The Medical Director plays a key role in the health of all the animals at the Arizona Animal Welfare League and is an important member of the management team, reporting directly to the President and CEO. The Medical Director oversees a team of veterinarians, managers, and support staff.  The candidate will also serve as AAWL’s leading medical expert spokesperson in the media and as needed in public forums.



  • Leadership and oversight of managers responsible for the shelter clinic, public clinic, and foster departments
  • Leadership and management of up to 4 full-time veterinarians
  • Provide veterinary expertise in media, public forums and internally as needed
  • Hire/fire veterinarians and relief vets to meet the need in shelter/public clinics
  • Assist in establishing and monitoring the annual budget for the medical department
  • Participate in weekly meetings with management team/medical team
  • Provide management and Board of Directors with recommendations and information regarding medical services on a regular basis
  • Ensure high quality veterinary care is provided for shelter animals as well as animals seen in our public clinic and our foster department. 
  • Provide leadership and mentoring expertise to members of the medical department
  • Participate in events with partner organizations as well as AAWL’s signature events
  • Manage partnerships with Mid-Western University’s Shelter Medicine department
  • Maintain medical protocols and standard operating procedures
  • Guide staff in securing care for animals needing outside specialty medical services
  • Work with other departments within the shelter
  • Keep accurate and complete medical records
  • Review and analyze data on revenue and expenses; make recommendations for improvement/expansion of services/revenue
  • Must willing to hold premise license (public clinic) and DEA for public and shelter clinic and sign shelter rabies certificates



  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree required
  • Arizona veterinary license in good standing, or ability to obtain
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in shelter medicine is preferred
  • DEA license eligibility
  • Management and leadership experience
  • Media training preferred (will be provided)
  • Ability to keep accurate and complete medical records
  • Computer skills including word, excel, power point, Hippo (preferred), PetPoint
  • Ability to collect and analyze data and present to management/board
  • Experience or willingness to consult with rescue partners/others
