Many may not realize AAWL was founded in 1971 by American actress, Amanda Blake, best known for her role as 'Miss Kitty' on Gunsmoke.

After living for a year in a field next to a truck stop and spending days searching for food and water, Honey just wanted a home. One day, she made a friend in a kind hearted woman named Bessie, who spent a month gaining Honey’s trust. Bessie knew she couldn’t keep Honey, but she knew of the Arizona Animal Welfare League and she knew Honey deserved a better life than scraping by in a dirt lot. Bessie convinced Honey to go for a car ride, and brought her to us, ready to start her new life. Something was wrong with Honey, though; she had become lethargic and weak.

If you’re in the market for a new best friend — or pair of new best friends — the Arizona Animal Welfare League is running a deal for adoptions.

As part of their “Me and My Shadow” program, the Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA are trying to de-stigmatize black cats:

To celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day (which occurred on Monday, August 17, 2015), the Arizona Animal Welfare League & Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (AAWL & SPCA) is offering a “Me and My Shadow” two-for-one adoption special that extends through August 23. During this time, you can adopt any cat or kitten at the regular adoption fee and adopt a black and white kitten at no additional cost.

PHOENIX - Studies show that black dogs and cats are adopted less often than pets of other colors, but Black Cat Appreciation Day is hoping to change that.

On Monday, the Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA starts a week-long special for adoptable dark-colored felines.

More than four million people are bitten by dogs each year despite the fact that these incidents are very preventable.

In honor of National Dog Bite Prevention Week from May 17 to May 23, the Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA is helping pet owners and those who come in contact with dogs stay safe by offering helpful reminders and warning signs.

The Arizona Animal Welfare League, the state’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter, hosted its fundraiser, An Evening to Paws, at the Hotel Valley Ho.

The March 20 evening was a casual ’50s-inspired affair, complete with Doo Wop music, an auction, AZ Lindy Hop dancers and ’50s diner food.
